Low wages drive early childhood teacher shortages

Posted

We are writing as high school students enrolled in an Early Childhood Education (ECE) certificate program at Middle Bucks Institute of Technology. We are learning about child development and the importance of early education for young children as we prepare for careers in education. There is a significant need for highly qualified early education teachers these days due to a severe teacher shortage.

This shortage is driven by low wages; the average PA child care worker wage is only $10.69/hour. We love shaping young brains and know it is the most important job, however working in ECE won’t enable us to earn a self-sustaining wage.

We are reaching out to local legislators to express our concerns. We hope you can join us in advocating for an early learning system that will pay ECE professionals a thriving wage so that we can look forward to supporting ourselves while working with our youngest learners.
