Lenape Chamber Ensemble to perform second summer concert

Posted

Lenape Chamber Ensemble will present three works at its second Summer Gala Concert at Delaware Valley University’s Life Sciences Building, 700 E. Butler Ave., Doylestown, at 8 p.m. Saturday.

On the program is a Haydn String Quartet called “The Kaiser,” composed of variations based on the Austrian national anthem; a Sonata for clarinet and piano by English composer William Alwyn; and a String Quintet by Brahms dubbed “The Spring Quintet” — described by the composer to his publisher as “the most beautiful work you have ever had from me.”

Opening the program, the distinguished Israeli violinist Kobi Malkin will lead the performance of Haydn’s “Kaiser” String Quartet Op 76, No. 3 in C Major. He will be joined by Nancy Bean, first violinist of the Wister Quartet; Caeli Smith, award-winning violist and performer with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra; and Alberto Parrini, principal cellist of the Northeastern Philharmonic.

Alwyn’s “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano,” written in 1962, is an example of this composer’s adventurous exploration of new music, while making it easy on the ears. Alan R Kay, co-principal clarinetist and former director of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra joins international prizewinning pianist Marcantonio Barone in this dramatic Sonata.

While writing his “String Quintet in F Major” in 1882, Brahms was visiting the scenic resort town of Bad Ischl for the second time, and its extreme beauty inspired him to write a piece of music pervaded by the atmosphere of spring. He even wrote on every page “Written in the Spring of 1882.” All strings: Nancy Bean and Kobi Malkin; Dana Kelley and Caeli Smith and cellist Alberto Parrini, join in this joyous work.

Tickets at $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, and $5 for children are available online, at the door, or by calling 610-294-9361.
