Interactive Spelling Bee continues at Music Mountain

Posted
Music Mountain Theatre presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” through Sept. 1.

The comic tale of high school-aged overachievers, their hopes, their dreams, and their angst plays out as they compete for a slot in the National Spelling Bee. Overseen by adults still stuck in adolescence themselves, they sing their stories, utilize unique spelling techniques, and learn that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

The musical is based on a concept by Rebecca Feldman, with a book by Rachel Sheinkin, and music and lyrics by William Finn. MMT’s production is directed by co-Artistic Director Jordan Brennan.

First directed on Broadway in 2005 by James Lapine, the musical is the winner of two Tony Awards, two Theatre World Awards, three Drama Desk Awards, and two Lucille Lortel Awards.

Music Mountain Theatre’s production also feature’s some award-winning artists. Lucinda Fisher and Eddie Honan play long-time spelling bee hostess and former champion, Rona Lisa Peretti, and magic foot speller William Barfee respectively. Fisher won the Best Actress Mountie Award for her performance as Tracy Turnblad in “Hairspray,” and Honan won for his portrayal of Max Bialystock in “The Producers.”

Tickets are $25, with discounts are available for seniors, students, and military with ID. Performances play at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with 3 p.m. matinees Saturday and Sunday. For information and reservations, contact 609-397-3337 or visit musicmountaintheatre.org.
