When Marvin Alexan Fernandez Chicas drowned saving two children struggling in the water at Lake Nockamixon State Park, he left behind a 3-year-old son, a wife and a devastated mother in Central America.
Efforts are now underway to raise money to send his body to Honduras and to support his young child, Dylan, who was by his side fishing at the time of the tragedy.
As of Monday, GoFundMe donations from 1,445 people had surpassed $69,000 with a goal of $70,000.
In a social media post, Lisa Roman Lucci of Doylestown Neighbors United, wrote:
“Marvin jumped into the water and pulled the children to the shore, but then began to struggle and disappeared under the water. Divers recovered his body more than two hours later. All the money raised will be used to help with transport and funeral costs and then to provide for his little boy.”
Officials said the two children were seen struggling in the Tohickon Creek in the cliffs area at about 5 p.m. June 29. Swimming is prohibited in the creek and the 1,450-acre lake. The rescued children were uninjured.
Chicas was 37 and worked at Heaven’s Gate, a horse farm in Pipersville.
