Hockey drops puck on ’22-23 season

Posted

The Suburban High School Hockey League (SHSHL) opened last week.

Council Rock South (1-0), the defending SHSHL National champs and whose 3-3 tie last year was Pennridge’s only blemish, looked like a team to be reckoned with in its 9-1 thumping of Souderton last Wednesday. Six different South skaters scored their opening six goals. The Golden Hawks take on Pennsbury on Thursday.

It would have been brutally hard for Pennridge (0-1) to top last season: the undefeated Rams won the SHSHL, the Flyers Cup and the state championship. Their attempt to equal last year’s record stalled last Thursday in a 6-3 loss at Pennsbury. Andrew Savona scored twice for the Rams.

The Rams host CB South on Thursday. CB South (1-0) opened last Wednesday hosting CR North (0-2). Keith Waldron lit the lamp with five minutes left in regulation to break a 2-all tie and give South a 3-2 win.

CB East (1-0) beat North Penn 3-1 last Wednesday. Corey Kosick scored twice in a three-minute span in the third period while goalie Matt Mangiacapre turned away 25 of 26 Knight shots. The Patriots hosted Souderton on Wednesday. All Wednesday games were concluded after press time.

CB West rallied from 2-0 to top CR North, playing on short rest, 4-3 on Thursday. Jack Misoda scored twice for West. The Bucks host North Penn on Thursday and the Indians battled Neshaminy on Wednesday.

Pennridge, Central Bucks and Council Rock all play in the National division. In the American, Quakertown hopes to build on a breakout season last year. The Panthers (1-0) thumped Bensalem last Wednesday, putting up a 3-spot in the first period on their way to a 6-1 win. Two of those early goals came from Branden McNally off of Lucas Cunnane’s assist.

Quakertown played Springfield on Wednesday night.
