Starting in 1964, the Doylestown Youth Recreation Council sponsored basketball and football games, summer recreation programs, the Fanny Chapman swim team, dances in Central Bucks High School’s cafeteria (now CB-West), the Youth Fishing Project, and an ice skating rink near Lenape Junior High School.
Founded in January 1964, the minutes of the Council’s June 1966 meeting were published in The Intelligencer:
• The president, Dan Steelman, presided and representatives from 19 local service clubs were present. Miss Marie Welsh, Treasurer, announced a very successful fund drive — over $1500 to date. We are most grateful to over 100 students who participated in the drive [which was chaired by Walter Smerconish — see photo].
• Mr. Ed Miller reported that the Maplewood baseball field is ready to be used and that the backstop is up. Thanks should go to Borough Council for their efforts in helping with this project. The playgrounds are all ready and will open June 20. The Youth Corps will supply 3 students for Borough work. The Council voted $400 to be used towards a basketball court to be erected at War Memorial Field. The Hillside Avenue playground is due to get a face-lifting for use this summer.
• Mr. Andrew Corsner stated that the Borough Dam was recently restocked and the Council voted another $100 for trout and crappy bass.
Today, the Borough of Doylestown’s Parks and Recreation Program manages youth recreation as well as town athletic facilities and other activities. The YMCA of Bucks and Hunterdon Counties also provides many services previously supported by the YRC.
