History Lives: Palace of Sweets

Posted

The Palace of Sweets was located in the northeast corner of Lenape Hall, in the center of Doylestown. The store featured homemade candies “made carefully in our own kitchen” along with other snack foods and Breyers Ice Cream. The owner, Charles Mamounis (1889-1956) was well known for his community spirit and generosity.

“Doylestown Town Notes” in December, 1932, reported, “A green and white striped cane weighing 14¼ lbs and 5 feet 4 inches long is on display in the Palace of Sweets window on East State Street. This huge bit of candy made by Mamounis will gladden the hearts of the Tabor Home Children on Christmas Day.”

And again in December of 1936, the Intelligencer announced, “A six-foot candy cane, which tips the scales at 14-1/2 pounds, is suspended on three white ribbons in the show window at the Palace of Sweets in the Odd Fellows Building [Lenape Hall] at 6-8 East State Street. It will be a Christmas gift to the Tabor Home.”

The shop at 8 East State Street today is occupied by Soap Opera, a luxury soap boutique.
