News of a wedding in Doylestown had traveled across the country during the summer of 1913, and the San Francisco Call carried the following article on Aug. 10.
The happy couple were Sellersville 19-year-old Anna Barbara Seeh (1894-1945) and Sellersville 24-year-old James Harrison Clymer Sr. (1888-1958):
A MOTORCYCLE WEDDING
East Competes with West in Number of Such Ceremonies
While motorcycle weddings and honeymoons are quite common in the western states, especially in California, where the riding season continues the year round, Doylestown, Pa. is among the first to report a motorcycle wedding in the east.
J. Harrison Clymer and Margaret [sic] Seeh, both enthusiastic motorcyclists of Sellersville, Pa., recently rode their two wheelers to Doylestown, procured a license, were married, and immediately started on a honeymoon awheel.
The earliest motorcycles appeared in the United States in the 1890s. By the early 1900s motorcycles were becoming widely available, and people were riding them for pleasure. By 1913 the Indian Motorcycle Co. was the world’s largest producer, selling 32,000 machines; competitor Harley Davidson’s production had reached about 13,000.
