The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the Constitution doesn’t forbid the mingling of politics and faith. It only prohibits the establishment of an official government religion. So Donald Trump is free to sell the Word of God. But at what cost?
A 2022 Gallup study reveals that 72% of Republicans rated the nation’s moral values as poor. Yet what of their twice-divorced, twice-impeached standard-bearer? Republicans compare Trump to Jesus and buy the “God Bless The USA” Bible.
The First Amendment protects the freedom of religion. It doesn’t protect religion from those who feel free to shamelessly exploit it.
Unless it’s been redacted, this new Bible probably still contains core teachings such as the part that implores us to defend the rights of the poor and needy (Proverbs 31: 8-9), and the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus (the original Jesus of love and compassion, not of grievance and retribution) tells us no one can serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24)
The question is whether anyone will read this Bible, or will they just hide behind it at the next Trump rally.
