Central Bucks West sweeps Pennridge

Posted

Central Bucks West girls volleyball coach Joel King wants his team to play the role of a spoiler this season.
While King understands it will take some time for his young squad to develop, the Bucks played this role to perfection when they blanked defending Suburban One League Continental Conference champion Pennridge 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 26-24) in the recent opener for both teams.
Sophomore Alexis Barklage had seven kills with an ace, fellow sophomores Lily Rasnake added six kills and Rachel Hu chipped in with four kills and six digs to pace the Bucks.
“We’ll take our licks as a young team,” King stated. “We need to find our identity. Getting off to a good start is a key for us. We were very happy from what we saw from our scrimmage. We feel we have learned a lot, and we will continue to grow.”

King also anticipates sophomores Erin Ferello and Alexa Lee along with juniors Mackenzie Lund and Caroline Taylor to help form a core. Barklage was a second-team, all-league selection last year, and Lund and Taylor are the lone returnees who saw significant playing time last year.
“We have four seniors, but they are role players,” said King. “Our sophomore class is leading us this year. They will be a key for us.”
King definitely wants his team to keep a low profile.
“We want to be that scrappy team that everybody hates to play,” stressed King. “We hope we can grow as a team. We should be competitive at the end of the year, and for the next couple of years.”
