Girls lacrosse notebook: Golden Hawks are flying high

Posted

On the morning of April 6, just one 3A team in District One stood at 7-0.

The Council Rock South Golden Hawks (3-0 SOL) were fresh off of a 9-6 triumph over Gwynedd Mercy to earn that record. Zoe Brossman and Lizzie Hearn had hat tricks on offense while goalie Kaya Mallon saved 14 defensively.

CR South has won blowouts – it bested William Tennent, Neshaminy and Hatboro-Horsham by a combined 55-2 score – as well as tight games. Few were tighter than the Golden Hawks’ overtime win over North Penn on March 29 when Hearn scored two minutes into the extra frame after captain Karissa Smedley won the draw. Brossman scored four times against the Knights, who had erased a three-goal CR South lead before Hearn’s game-winner. Goalie Kiera Holt also recorded her 300th career save.

The Golden Hawks’ signature win came two days prior when they topped Pennridge, the SOL National defending runners-up, 10-8. CR South erased a 5-4 halftime deficit and were paced by Amy Loving’s hat trick.

CR South faces sister school CR North on May 3 in what will be a compelling matchup. The Indians entered spring break at 5-4 (2-2 SOL). Last Wednesday, they nearly erased a 12-8 North Penn lead with four minutes remaining, as CR North won draws and got the game to 12-11 with 59 seconds left. That score stood as the final.

The day before, Kat McBride scored five goals and junior Maddy Mela added four as North beat CB South 22-12. The Ondria sisters have also been consistent scoring threats for CR North. In the Indians’ five wins, Charlotte Ondria has scored 22 goals while Julie has found the back of the net 10 times. North takes the field again on April 17 when it travels to West Chester Henderson.

One team that topped North was Pennridge, who used Kate Unzicker’s six goals to roll to a 16-8 win on March 29. Pennridge is 5-3 (1-1 SOL) after last Thursday’s 18-11 home win over Perkiomen Valley. It was the Rams’ most prolific scoring game to date. Ava Fantaskey and Unzicker both scored four goals.

The Rams recently had two senior standouts – Grace Rosica and Alexa Bailey – ink college letters of intent. Bailey will join two other area products – sophomores Kayla Hillaert (Quakertown) and Jill Hopkins (Council Rock North) – in suiting up for Shippensburg. Rosica, who scored seven goals in Pennridge’s first four wins, will play in the America East next year at UMass Lowell.

Pennridge returned to action in Wednesday’s late game hosting CB West.
