Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado” performing in Doylestown

Posted

The Bucks County Gilbert & Sullivan Society presents Gilbert & Sullivan’s most-performed musical comedy, “The Mikado.”

Shows are at 8 p.m. Friday; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday, in Delaware Valley University’s Life Sciences Theater, 700 E. Butler Ave., Doylestown.

The show’s cast of top local singers will be accompanied by the 35-piece Bucks County Gilbert & Sullivan Orchestra.

Gilbert & Sullivan’s masterpiece of comic characters and sumptuous music takes cheerful aim at the pomposity of Victorian British society, but softens the satire by setting it in an imaginary imperial Japanese city.

The show’s colorful fantasy combines with some of the most memorable patter songs and ballads from the G&S canon – “I’ve Got a Little List,” “Three Little Maids,” “A Wand’ring Minstrel I,” “Tit-willow” and many others.

As the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan play in history, the musical romp for the entire family includes characters such as Koko, the comic Lord High Executioner; Pooh-Bah, the Lord High Everything Else; and Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo, the young lovers who are each engaged to someone else.

“The Mikado” is directed by Bob Binkley and Julie C. May. Music director is Lee F. Milhous, and Bill Buckman and Ed Connolly of Doylestown are producers. Technical director is Dave Cassel, Kat Carr is stage manager, Joe Nappi is rehearsal pianist, and Joy Woffindin is choreographer. The sets are designed and painted by Henry Heymann, a veteran of decades of professional theater productions.

The cast features Michael Schiumo as Ko-Ko; Alexandra Gilliam as Yum-Yum; Timothy Faulkner as Nanki-Poo; David Swartz as the Mikado; Wilber Lewis as Pooh-Bah; Julie Smith as Pitti-Sing; Sarah Folsom-Kovarik as Peep-Bo; Jane Betro as Katisha; Bob Binkley as Pish-Tush; Eli Rosen as Go-To; and a chorus of nobles and ladies.

Tickets at the door are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and students, and discounted prices are available by going to the Bucks G&S website. Tickets and information is at BucksGilbertAndSullivan.org or call 215-262-5550.
