Frenchtown Bookshop sets workshop, film screening, art book launch

Posted

Frenchtown Bookshop a family-owned neighborhood independent book store located at 28 Bridge St., Frenchtown, N.J., hosts the following events in February.

First up is “Publish or Perish,” a workshop for writers, with author and editor Tobias Carroll. The course on how to polish and submit short fiction for publication will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1.

In this one-session workshop, Carroll, managing editor of the literary magazine “Vol. 1 Brooklyn” and widely-published short-story writer, explains how to get published: What editors are looking for (and what turns them off); where and how to submit your work; an “inside view” of how stories are reviewed by editors; and examples of stories that have worked, and haven’t worked, at literary magazines.

Tuition includes a copy of Carroll’s latest novel, “Ex-Members,” which will be used as part of the workshop. The workshop will end with a Q&A about how to get published.

Workshop tuition is $25 at frenchtownbookshop.com.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, the Bookshop presents a cozy private screening of a new independent film “Hello, Bookstore” at its Sawbuck Cinema.

The film is a “sweet’ documentary about the daily life of a book shop (“The Bookstore,” in Lenox, Mass.).

The Bookstore is not only a book shop, but is also a cozy and communal meeting-place, where owner Matt Tannenbaum greets and kibitzes with friends and neighbors. When the pandemic threatens the future of The Bookstore, the people of Lenox band together to save it.

Admission is $10 cash at the door. No advance purchase or reservations required.

Frenchtown Bookshop presents author/musician/painter Joe Coco for the launch of his new book of paintings, “The Full Moon Series.”

At 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, join in on the night of the Snow Moon to celebrate Coco’s new book of full-moon paintings, created on the first and last full moons of every year for the past five decades.

Coco is a Renaissance Man. He has produced more than 60 albums of his original songs. He teaches courses in art and music history at Centenary University. And, he transforms into King Louis XIV for Frenchtown’s Bastille Day festivals.

Every December, for the past five decades, Coco has created a full-moon painting “as a synopsis of the year.” And, every January, he creates a full-moon painting to anticipate the year to come. He accompanies the paintings with an original musical composition. Fifty years of these paintings are now being published as “The Full Moon Series.”

For this event, Coco will show slides of selected paintings, perform the accompanying songs, and talk about this year-end practice. He will also sign copies of the new books.

Admission is free, and all are welcome.
