Bucks County poet and writer Lynn Levin’s debut collection of short stories, “House Parties,” published by Spuyten Duyvil, is due out May 1.
Her poem “Fixing Broken Things” recently appeared in the Bucks County Herald’s Poet’s Corner, which is curated by Tom Mallouk.
Levin is the 1999 Bucks County Poet Laureate and winner of the 2021 Bucks County Short Fiction Contest. She is an adjunct professor of writing and literature at Drexel University and longtime resident of Southampton.
She will present “House Parties” at many public events, among them: Doylestown Bookshop on May 11; Middletown Friends Meetinghouse on June 3; Southampton Free Library on June 20; and the Wordsmith’s Series at Bucks County Community College on Sept. 22.
In “House Parties,” which is also available as e-book, Levin presents a broad range of characters who ardently, foolishly, and often with weird invention, relentlessly spar with their fates.
Three friends hike through Yosemite in search of an awe-inspiring waterfall that may or may not exist…a girl on a high-school science trip finds herself abandoned on an island inhabited by aggressive monkeys…a lonely young rabbinical student creates and animates a female form only to see her beloved creature acquire free will…overwhelmed by surveys, an office worker rebels à la Bartleby…a couple believes that a move to a friendly and sophisticated exurban neighborhood will set the stage for happy marriage.
Levin’s previous books include the poetry collections “The Minor Virtues” and “Miss Plastique,” as well as “Poems for the Writing: Prompts for Poets” (as co-author) and a translation from the Spanish, “Birds on the Kiswar Tree poems by Odi Gonzales.”
