The third and final Lenape Chamber Ensemble Summer Gala Concert series performance will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, at Delaware Valley University’s Auditorium in the Life Sciences Building.
The program opens with a work by Zoltan Kodály: his “Serenade for two Violins and Viola, Op. 12,” a spirited and cheerful work, with a concentration of Hungarian folk elements. Joining celebrated violist Brett Deubner will be violinists Katie Hyun, founder and director of the Quodlibet Ensemble, and Nancy Bean, first violinist of the Wister Quartet.
Lenape’s prizewinning pianist Marcantonio Barone returns for the “Piano Quintet in F minor” by Ottorino Respighi. Joining the two violins will be violist Caeli Smith, and Alberto Parrini, principal cellist with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philarmonic. The quintet was published in 1902, 40 years after the composer’s death, so no one knows why the first allegro movement is almost three times longer than the following two.
Another mystery of “what was written when” applies to Mozart’s “Grande Sestetto Concertante K.364.” He wrote his “Sinfonia Concertante in E Flat Major” back in 1779, a piece for viola, violin and orchestra. But it was not published at the time. Later, in 1808, 17 years after Mozart’s death, someone thought it would be a good idea to transcribe it for a sextet so it could be played by a smaller ensemble. So now, the “Sestetto” as it is, is for two violins (Nancy Bean and Katie Hyun); violas (Brett Deubner and Caeli Smith); and cellos (Alberto Parrini and Lloyd Smith).
