Doylestown Borough’s plastic bag ban moves forward

Posted

After several years of debate and consideration, Doylestown Borough’s environmental advisory committee has agreed to move forward with its proposed ordinance to ban retail businesses from providing single-use plastic bags.

The measure will go to borough council for authorization to advertise the ordinance next month, officials said.

Once adopted, retail businesses within the borough will not be permitted to provide single-use plastic bags or non-recycled paper bags to customers.  A reusable paper bag or other reusable bag can be provided to the patron for 15 cents.

“Our goal is to reduce waste,” EAC chairman George Mullikin said at a town meeting on the matter in September.

In 2019, the EAC, which has been studying the issue since 2016, conducted a survey on single-use plastics in the borough. Some 80 percent responded, with a significant majority supporting limiting their use, the borough reported.
