Downer’s ask of local police is a small one

Posted

I was glad to see that a number of Bucks police departments have engaged collaboratively with the NAACP regarding transparency in the three years since the George Floyd killing (“Just, safe policing starts with data and transparency,” June 1). I would have been happier to know more specifically, which had and which hadn’t been collaborative.

Still, what Ms. Downer is asking for, in terms of transparency, is a very small ask, and it’s disappointing that some departments feel that if they wait, this issue will just go away. It will not.

These questions matter, regardless of whether you are a person of color or not. We all want to feel that our police are here to protect and serve, not intimidate, or harm us. But because of incidents that surface in the news almost every day, many people have reason to believe that might not be true in their case.

We should all be ashamed that this is so.

My own interactions with Bucks County law enforcement have been terrific. The officers I have met deserve to have the data made public, so that we can all trust that they are truly protecting everyone, equally.
