DKG program encourages love of reading in Morrisville school students

Posted

On March 28, Morrisville Holy Trinity School’s third and fourth graders were given a gift that could be held in one’s hand for a short period of time, and in one’s memory, for a lifetime.

As it has done for over two decades, Delta Kappa Gamma/Alpha Nu chapter, has fostered the Write-Read-Write program. The goal of this initiative is to encourage lifetime readers in elementary schools. This year’s school selection was spearheaded by Holy Trinity teacher and member of DKG, Kathy Gabriel.

Months before the actual book distribution, students were asked to write a letter to members of DKG. Each letter brought a clear understanding of what the child loved about books and why the child enjoyed a particular genre. It was evident that the children in both third and fourth grade gave careful detail to penmanship and grammar.

These letters were distributed to Alpha Nu members. Members carefully read the letters and purchased a book to encourage the interest of each child. After purchase, members placed a DKG label on the back of the front cover, enclosed a personal letter, and wrapped the book.

The school also received a donation of nonfiction books, which could supplement the school library collection of reading materials.

Many members of DKG and Principal Jeffrey McCusker, were there to evidence the smiles on faces of the students and staff on distribution day. Kathy Gabriel talked to each class about the importance of lifetime learning through reading books, as well as asking students what genres they enjoy. Hands went up quickly and students were eager to share personal favorites. A lively activity was done in conjunction with an Easter poem. It was not long before the noisy room quickly became quiet. One by one, the students were sitting in their seats reading their new book, picked out just for them.

At the May meeting, the chapter will receive letters from the third and fourth grade students who will share their thoughts about their new book.

The Write-Read-Write Program is one of the many community service initiatives supported by the women educators of Delta Kappa Gamma. Literacy programs such as annual grants-in-aid, a Book and Blankie project aimed at promoting literacy with new moms, and quarterly donations to food drives coincide with chapter meetings.
