Divine Hand Ensemble presents “A Night of Spooky Movie Music”

Posted

The historic Newtown Theatre will welcome the Divine Hand Ensemble for “A Night of Spooky Movie Music” at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.

The Divine Hand Ensemble is the world’s only theremin-fronted band, led by Mano Divina Giannone. The theremin is a 100-year-old electronic instrument that Giannone plays without physical contact.

Instead, he manipulates electric sound waves by moving his hands between two antennae to produce eerie, otherworldly notes. He is backed by a string quartet, two harps, vibraphone, accordion, and special guests.

Because Giannone appears to be pulling music out of thin air, some people compare his performance to a conjuring act. The Divine Hand Ensemble’s unique combination of the theremin, strings and percussion has led people to describe their music as “hypnotic, breathtaking, and mesmerizing” and “an amalgamation of magic, science, and music.”

During their Oct. 15 Newtown Theatre performance, the Ensemble will play music from a wide range of spooky movies, including “Edward Scissorhands,” “Ghostbusters,” “Wolfman,” “12 Monkeys,” “Labyrinth,” and other Halloween favorites.

Tickets are available at TheNewtownTheatre.com for $30 per person or $25 for theater members. Any remaining tickets will be sold for $40 at the door on the night of the show, if available. All seating is general admission. The theater is located at 120 N. State St. in Newtown Borough.
