Dining Out — Restaurant Roving: No fried foods on this menu

When chef Larry Brown arrived at the Pour House restaurant at New Hope Winery two years ago, owner Sandra Price was specific, he said: No fried foods on the menu.

He has stuck to that mandate along with making sure everything is as fresh as possible, which includes his stopping at local farms stands to see what is in season.

His menu is short but comprehensive, with something for everyone, ranging from his popular short-rib sandwich to his seasonal salads to his roasted salmon, crab cakes, free-range chicken, shrimp with pilaf, chicken salad, pulled pork sandwiches and strip steaks. For vegetarians there is a hummus plate, and Brown will create a vegetable plate on request.

For everyone, “I try to create a tasty dish with a little twist on it,” he said.

The menu is seasonal and the chef’s specials change regularly. Brown recently introduced the fall menu complete with hearty squash soups and salads flavored with local apples. In a season known for heavy dishes, he said, “I like to keep things lighter.”

Brown’s favorite customers are the ones who let him choose what to make for them. When they say, “make me whatever you like,” Brown says, “I feel like I really need to wow them.”

A graduate of the former French Culinary Institute in New York City, Brown has been well-known in Bucks County culinary circles for years. He spent nine years at Martine’s in New Hope and worked at the former Raven in New Hope before arriving at the Pour House. There he prepares lunch and dinner Thursday through Sunday while the winery is open for business and prior to the many musical events held at the winery.

The full bar includes rotating craft beers and specialty cocktails along with New Hope Winery’s own wines.

The New Hope Winery and Pour House restaurant are located in a former barn built in the 1700s, which went on to serve as a museum and antique shop before becoming a winery. It is located between New Hope and Peddler’s Village. Reservations are recommended for the restaurant on nights when there is live music.
