Council Rock students, staff honored for volunteerism

Posted

Some students and staff from the Council Rock School District were recently honored with the Volunteer of the Year award by the Caring for Friends Foundation, a local charity that provides meals to those in need.

Council Rock has been involved with the program since 2021, and this year alone district volunteers have delivered an average of 400-600 meals a month. The program in Council Rock is a collaboration between students from Council Rock High School North in Newtown Township and the district’s Sloan School, an alternative setting where students with various issues are placed on a temporary basis.

The students put together meal kits that are boxed and delivered to area agencies that help the hungry or homebound.

“Hunger does not discriminate,” Council Rock Superintendent Andrew Sanko said. “And these students are demonstrating compassion while learning important social skills.”

The students are guided in their volunteer efforts by teachers Cemantha Giulian and Adam Collachi.

“The relationships, social skills and communication among the students are amazing to watch,” Giulian said. “This program is really making a big impact on the community.”
