Central Bucks teams, Quakertown, Palisades prep for football playoffs

Posted

Let’s say it all together now: Throw out the records in rivalry games.

Central Bucks East (8-2) was home, had a three-game win streak and owned the better record last Friday night, yet it was a resurgent CB West (6-4) who left Buckingham with a 21-14 win. Vinny Cherubini, who reached the century mark, had a 23-yard third quarter touchdown run that broke the 14-all tie. The resurgent Bucks, who guaranteed themselves a playoff spot after the “W,” have now won five of their last six.

And the rivals will go at it again, one week later. In a quirk of the power points, No. 6 East will host No. 11 West this Friday in the first round of District One 6A playoffs.

Speaking of resurgent, CB South (7-3) sat at .500 after a Sept. 30 loss to North Penn. But the Titans made it four wins in a row with their 32-23 win at Pennridge (2-8). Jack Carver and Anthony Leonardi both rushed for over 125 yards and combined for three touchdowns.

The Titans earned the 10th seed in district playoffs and head to No. 7 Souderton this Friday in the first round. Friday night completes a tough season for the Rams, who lost three games by three or fewer points.

Unbeaten Upper Dublin is the class of 5A, and it looked it Friday in a 38-8 home win over Quakertown (5-5). Yet the No. 16 Panthers, who have rebounded from a 1-3 start, will go to district playoffs for the second straight year. They head to No. 1 Garnet Valley in Friday’s 6A first round, and a second chance in as many weeks to knock off an undefeated team.

Council Rock North (4-6) edged host Council Rock South (4-6) 21-20 in their rivalry game for the third straight year. South took a 20-14 lead on Chase Ennis’ touchdown early in the fourth quarter. North responded two minutes later when Jackson Farley found Will Scibona for a touchdown. The Indians close the year winning their final two. The four wins mark CR South’s best season since 2018 and North’s best year since 2015.

In its 24-19 win over George School, New Hope-Solebury (2-8) snapped an eight-game losing streak. The Lions will head down river to play Bristol on Friday in the District One 2A playoffs, with the winner to face West Catholic for PIAA spot.

Palisades (8-2) entered Friday night having won five in a row, scoring 35 points or more in four of the wins. Friday’s 21-14 win over Saucon Valley was more defense-focused, but it extended the streak and marked the 2A Pirates’ third win over a 3A team this fall. It’s been a remarkable turnaround for a school that won just two games last year.

The No. 1 Pirates host No. 4 Catasauqua on Saturday in the opening round of District 11 playoffs. Palisades beat Catty on the road 20-17 two weeks ago.

No. 6 South Hunterdon (6-3) fell to No. 3 Maple Shade 31-7 in the first round of the South Jersey Group 1 sectional on Friday. The Eagle defense didn’t allow more than 14 points in any regular season game. 2022 is the second straight year where the Eagles won at least six games.
