Bucks Poet Laureate emeritus launches new take on yoga and poetry

Posted

These days many people have been to a yoga class or a poetry reading, but the Yogic Poetry Experience combines both into a familiar yet completely new experience.

Launching Friday, Jan. 26, at Seva Yoga in Yardley, Bucks County Poet Laureate emeritus Corie Feiner will perform poetry from her manuscript, “A Poem for Every Pose,” alongside yoga instructor Jen Galgano. Participants will be treated to a full-body yoga practice intertwined with a soulful poetry performance that honors the depth and healing potential in every pose.

“Practicing to poetry was unlike anything I’ve previously experienced. It was a beautiful opportunity to connect with each pose in an entirely new way,” said Galgano who was inspired to join forces with Feiner after hearing about her project.

The Yogic Poetry Experience received a glowing response after the duo shared a taste of the experience at the Bucks County Yoga Festival last spring. “Experiencing our yoga practice through the unique combination of language and asana, was both intimate and immersive and brought forth a new dimension to what we call our practice,” said festival founder Trish Shumsonk.

Feiner is no stranger to the stage, and she has the chops to prove it. Her performances have been hailed as “wonderful,” by The New York Times and “stunning,” by Backstage Magazine.

Yet, despite the success, Feiner is most proud of her work as an educator, which spans a broad range from inner-city schools, to colleges, to community workshops. Recently, she led a fundraising workshop at Yardley’s Gather Place Museum and shared her poems at ribbon-cuttings for the Yardley Ducks and the new Yardley Refillery.

Yardley Borough Councilman David Applebaum jokes that she is “the town poet.” Feiner says, “I don’t know about that, but what I do know is that everyone has a poem inside of them, and it’s my mission to help them release it.”

In keeping with this spirit, the Yogic Poetry Experience also includes a writing workshop where participants led by Feiner will write a collaborative poem about their relationship to their bodies while sipping kombucha provided by sponsor, Sole Kombucha of Wrightstown.

Feiner wants everyone to gets something out of the Yogic Poetry Experience even if they have never written a poem or done yoga before. “You don’t have to be a poet or a yogi to participate,” emphasizes Feiner. “This is for anyone who wants to feel more connected to their movements and more at home in their bodies.”

In honor of Seva Yoga’s mission to do good, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Yoga4Philly, which is dedicated to providing yoga and meditation to help distressed and underserved youth.

The Yogic Poetry Experience happens from 6-7:30 p.m. Jan. 26, at Seva Yoga at the Historic Yardley Grist Mill, 10 N. Main St., 3rd Floor, Yardley. The participant fee is $20-$40 (sliding scale).
