Bucks Gilbert and Sullivan Society stages one of collaborators’ earliest shows

Posted

Listen up, Gilbert & Sullivan operetta lovers. Get ready to enjoy some of your favorite music this weekend. There are tickets to be grabbed at reasonable prices for shows at 8 p.m. Friday, July 16, at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, July 17, and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18.
After a year of not singing together, the Bucks County Gilbert and Sullivan Society is excited to be on stage again, this time producing one of the lesser-known G&S operettas: “The Sorcerer,” one of the collaborators’ earliest written shows. It features lovely ballads, operatic arias, hallmark fast-paced patter songs as well as memorable characters.
Bill Buckman and Ed Connolly of Doylestown are producing the show. Bob Binkley of New Britain and Henry Heymann of Doylestown are directing. Joy Woffindin of Lambertville, N.J., is choreographer. The technical director is Dave Cassel of Perkasie, and the stage manager is Jesse Roy of Doylestown.
Heymann, who has both costumed performers and designed and painted the set, is a veteran of decades of professional theater productions at the Santa Fe Opera House, as well as in New York City and Pittsburgh. Binkley is one of the founders of the Bucks County troupe.
The music is provided by the Bucks County Gilbert and Sullivan Orchestra with Lee F. Milhous as music director and conductor. Singers come from far and wide to sing Gilbert and Sullivan music and to participate with the Bucks County group, in particular.
The cast of “The Sorcerer” features Derek Hess of Boyertown as J.W. Wells, Sorcerer; Abby Capitolo of Abington as Aline; Timothy Faulkner of Ewing, N.J., as Alexis; Theresa Swartz of Ambler as Lady Sangazure; Ed Nealley of Havertown as Sir Marmaduke Poindextre; Chris Capitolo of Abington as Dr. Daly; Julie May of West Chester as Mrs. Partlet; Sarah Folsom-Kovarik of Ambler as Constance; Robert Kinney of Doylestown as the Notary.

The chorus is comprised of Lily Kull and Doug Kurtze, Ardmore; Faith Donaher, Phoenixville; Perry Beem, Bill Buckman, Jen Feder, Veronica Hodgson, Dennis Klöppel and Doug Wetterau, Doylestown; Jazmin Pachas, Warminster; Jean Weber, Warrington: Alice Deanin of Princeton, N.J., Joy Woffindin, Lambertville, N.J.; Amleto Pucci, Erwinna; and Jim Sanders, New Hope.
You have never seen Gilbert and Sullivan operettas?
Hint: Sit down, enjoy the music and silliness of the characters; try not to figure anything out why anything is happening. Just relax and let the richness of the music and the unexpected performance make you happy.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students, available at the door. Discounted prices are available by ordering ahead at Eventbrite.com.
The show will be performed at Delaware Valley University’s Life Sciences Theater, 700 E. Butler Ave., Doylestown. Enter the campus from New Britain Road onto Admissions Drive, and turn right into Parking Lot C which borders the Life Sciences Building. More information is at BucksGilbertAndSullivan.org or 215-262-5550.
