Herald writers, photographers and graphics specialists won awards in the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association’s Keystone Press Competition.
Earlier this year, more than 2,500 entries were received from 110 news organizations. Entries – in 53 regular categories and 12 specialty categories across seven circulation and four broadcast divisions – were judged by journalists in Virginia.
Freda Savana won a first place for breaking news with her story of a local group’s successful to place extra ballot drop boxes throughout the Borough of Doylestown before the 2020 presidential election.
Don Leypoldt captured a first for sports stories “Phoenix rising: Jenn Krzeminski,” “Elon volleyball aim high; “Reichwein, Holy Cross eye three‐peat”; “Upper Bucks duo in good spots for Leopards”; and “Cole powered: Sotack plays big role for Rutgers soccer.”
Gary Weckselblatt earned first place for his breaking news photo, “A year like no other,” a student embracing a Quakertown Community High School faculty member after he collects his high school diploma at the end of the pandemic year of 2020-2021.
Michael A. Apice garnered honorable mention for his action photo of CB West catcher Max Grill dropping to his knees to keep the ball in front.
Michael Naylor won first place for page design with a collection of features: Peddler’s Village Scarecrow Display; the annual Free Fall Action Sports Event; New Hope’s annual High Heel Drag Race; New Hope’s Halloween Trunk or Treat event; the Peddler’s Village annual Grand Illumination event; and the Quakertown Christmas Tree Lighting.
Regina Young won second place for Schools Sports Health & Fitness with CB East final four, honors highlight playoff week; Hey, 19! Cinderella Hawks, Faith advance to states; and Panthers carve out win against Rams.
Young won another second place for a news event photo, the parents and sister of Jason Kutt, watching as a boat parade passes by a memorial bench that was dedicated in memory of the 18‐year‐old, who died in a Nockamixon State Park hunting accident.
For special sections, the Herald Publishing staff won first place for Senior Living and second place for Flemington Life.
Awards will be presented during the Keystone Media Awards Brunch Oct. 12, in conjunction with the News Media Business Summit at the Sheraton Hershey Harrisburg Hotel.
