The 2023 Plein Air Open, an annual competition showcasing the talents of plein air artists from throughout the greater Bucks County region, has announced its winners.
The competition, which celebrates the beauty of outdoor painting, attracted a diverse range of talented artists, each capturing the essence of their surroundings in “stunning and evocative” ways. The artwork is on view through June 4, at AOY Art Center/Gallery in Lower Makefield Township.
Taking the top spot and earning the first-place position is April Ann Bohlmer of Wrightstown for her “moving and emotive” piece titled “In Perpetuity.” Bohlmer’s work showed excellence in a “swift and successful execution with high tonal quality. An exquisite sense of passing in light, atmosphere and time,” commented awards judge Alan Fetterman.
Helena Van Emmerik-Finn of Doylestown claimed the second-place position with her artwork “Patterson Lane.” Van Emmerik-Finn’s skillful work in pastel and attention to detail resulted in “a captivating composition that effortlessly captured the essence of Patterson Lane.”
Judith Nentwig of Lower Gwynedd secured the third-place position with her artwork “Fallsington’s Stagecoach Tavern.” Nentwig’s portrayal of the historic tavern highlighted her ability to depict architectural details and the vibrant atmosphere of the location, demonstrating a mastery of plein air painting.
In addition to the top three winners, several artists were recognized with honorable mentions for their outstanding contributions to the competition. The honorable mentions, listed in alphabetical order, are as follows:

● Dorothy Hoeschen, of Riegelsville, “The Heritage Tree”
● Clarissa Kear, of Philadelphia, “The Grist Mill”
● William Martin, of Glen Gardner, N.J., “St. Andrew’s by Lake Afton”
● Robert McBride, of East Windsor, N.J., “The Falls at Lake Afton”
● Mark McCoy, of Perkasie, “Hibbs House at Washington Crossing”
The Gallery is open with no entrance fee on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon-5 p.m. Donations are requested to continue to support local artist exhibitions.
