A.I. poised to shake up home security market

Posted

Are you among RubyHome Luxury Real Estate’s — RubyHome.com’s — estimated 51 million Americans with a home video surveillance system?

From reducing crime and burglaries to providing security and peace of mind the advent of artificial intelligence (A.I.) is expected to set the home surveillance market bar even higher this year and beyond, according to the Strategic Consortium of Intelligence Professionals website — www.scip.org.

The website reported that A.I. can minimize false alarm calls as well as send impending threat notices to law enforcement and homeowners.

“We see a combination of video and audio in these systems, and, while a lot have video, more have audio,” said Leigh Nunno, a Realtor and associate broker at Melissa Healy Group at Keller Williams Real Estate in Doylestown.

Cloud technology is another revolution in the home surveillance and security space, Forbes.com said.

From increased storage capacity to live and saved images, cloud storage can up the surveillance game.

Jaimie Meehan, a Realtor with the Healy Group said home surveillance systems have become a much-talked-about topic in recent years.

She noted home surveillance systems today have greater availability of DIY and professionally supplied products and services across a range of price points.

“The equipment is much more available — even in the DIY market — and this has increased self-installs” by home and property owners, she said.

“It goes to the next step for homeowners who install their own cameras and motion sensors and (control) is available on their phones to manage the security systems,” Meehan said.

At a minimum, many homeowners have wireless doorbell systems with cameras, which is a “very popular option, and we see that often,” she said.

Those with phone apps tied to their surveillance systems have greater flexibility — for monitoring and changing settings or directives — than those with older systems, she explained.

“We feel the audio can be of assistance in emergency systems (and situations), and there is a way to talk back. If someone is in trouble, you can let them know help is on the way,” Meehan said.

Phone apps tied to the surveillance system not only create flexibility — and the ability to respond to emergencies — they provide a real-time way to clarify if something is a true emergency or not.

“There are systems that allow you to combine all of your wireless devices like your security system and your lighting to have a comprehensive way to manage your home’s security,” Meehan said.
