Widow describes power of forgiveness at St. John’s tea

Sixty women attended a tea Saturday, April 6, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish in Lower Makefield and heard guest speaker Patti-Ann McDonald talk of her late husband, New York Police Detective Steven McDonald, who lived 30 years as a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic after being shot by a 15-year-old boy in 1986.

McDonald’s moving speech described the power of prayer and forgiveness in helping her husband survive for so long and her family heal.

She was three months pregnant with the couple’s son, Conor, when the shooting occurred.

At the tea, Patti-Ann McDonald gave out copies of “Why Forgive?” by the late Johann Christoph Arnold, a Christian author and pastor who befriended her husband and included the couple’s story in the book, with Steven McDonald writing its forward.

The tea was sponsored by the parish’s Women of the Word group.
