In 2023, the World Nativities exhibition is returning to Glencairn Museum, located in Bryn Athyn Pennsylvania. If you are not able to visit the Museum in person, you can still learn about Nativity art through our virtual Christmas at Glencairn tour. It is also a great way to discover more about Glencairn Museum before or after your visit.
The Glencairn Museum collection includes many artworks depicting the Nativity and the early life of Jesus Christ. This collection includes paintings, illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, and stained-glass windows. Ranging from medieval times to the present, many of these artworks were collected or commissioned by Raymond Pitcairn, who built Glencairn, a castle-like home for his family and art collection.
The Christmas at Glencairn virtual presentation focuses on the origins of the Nativity scene and the history of the Christmas story in art. In addition to Nativity art collected by Pitcairn, you will see a variety of three-dimensional Nativities (also known as créches) from the Glencairn Museum collection and discover how artists from around the world create Nativity scenes that reflect their own spiritual, intellectual, cultural, and regional backgrounds. You will view archival photographs showing how the Pitcairn family celebrated Christmas at Glencairn with joyful gatherings and elaborate decorations.
Questions are welcome during this live docent-led Zoom program. The virtual Christmas at Glencairn tour is offered publicly on Wednesday, November 28, from 6:00-7:00 p.m., and by appointment from December 2023 through January 2024.
