On September 1, 2021, Virginia Swain Saunders died at home, surrounded by her family.
Born to Charles Spencer Swain and Edna Jennings Swain, she was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She graduated from Vail Dean School in Elizabeth, New Jersey and Westhampton College in Richmond, Virginia with a major in sociology. Ginnie is survived by her husband, Ashby Saunders of New Hope, Spencer and Amy Saunders of New Hope, Elizabeth Saunders of Ocean Grove, New Jersey and Susannah and David Roberts of Doylestown and four grandchildren: Lila and Aubrey Saunders, and Christian and Kyle Roberts.
After settling in Boston, Ginnie was an administrator for the Harvard International Seminars under the direction of Henry Kissinger. The couple later re-located to Solebury, Bucks County in 1960 where they raised their family. She was very active in the community volunteering and had a profound love of classical music.
Pursuing a career and her passion for social work, Ginnie was one of the first staff members of Pine Run Retirement Community, as Director of Social Services, after which she served as Director of Resident Services at Wood River Village in Bensalem, retiring in 2003.
Ginnie loved meeting new people and keeping in regular contact with her many cherished life-long friends. Ginnie always put others before herself, forever trying to foster connections between individuals, and supporting their dreams and aspirations. She was known for her vibrant personality, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
The immediate family will gather privately to lay her to rest at Trinity Episcopal Church in Solebury. A celebration of her life will be planned for later in the Fall. In lieu of flowers contributions in Ginnie’s memory may be made to the Free Library of New Hope and Solebury, 93 West Ferry Street, New Hope, PA 18938 or www.NHSLibrary.org/donate.
