TV reporter from Newtown killed in moped crash

A CBS New York reporter from Newtown was killed in Brooklyn Saturday in a moped accident, according to the New York Post. Nina Kapur was 26.

According to the Post and CNN, Kapur was a passenger on a moped rented from Revel, a popular moped sharing service, when “the operator swerved for an unknown reason,” according to police.

Both Kapur and the driver of the moped fell onto the roadway and were rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where Kapur was pronounced dead. The driver, a 26-year-old man who was not identified, suffered minor injuries.

Neither was wearing a helmet, according to NYPD spokeswoman Denise Moroney, CNN said. The company said helmets cleaned with disinfectants are provided in the trunk of the moped, CNN said.

Kapur was remembered fondly by her colleagues at CBS New York, a CNN affiliate. “We are heartbroken here at CBS2 as a member of our news family has passed away,” CBS New York said in a statement Sunday. “Reporter Nina Kapur joined the team in June 2019 and was known for her contagious smile and love for storytelling.”

The crash is under investigation by the NYPD. Revel said it extended its deepest sympathies to Kapur’s family and loved ones and told CNN it too was investigating the accident and also was working with NYPD in its investigation.
