Troubled by Quakertown’s cancellation of assembly speaker

Posted

I was saddened to hear of the cancellation of inclusion speaker and psychiatrist, Dr. Mykee Fowlin from presenting at Quakertown High School.

It surprises me so much that the board would not want to showcase an educated African-American man and take advantage of his experience and background in understanding that everyone should be seen and heard especially in times of need.

I watched previous recordings of his presentation and found it remarkable and something I would absolutely want my daughter to participate in.

In fact, as a member of my company’s diversity and inclusion board, I will be reaching out to Dr. Fowlin and asking him to consider coordinating a presentation for us.

Interesting enough, the companies I interact with on a daily basis are promoting a diverse culture within the work space which seems counter to what I am seeing from the education boards in this county.

This is surprising and troubling to me as a parent. It has been the goal of my husband and I to raise our children with compassion and open mindedness.

Two of our children now work in Philadelphia as teachers and one as a therapist supporting autistic children. Both areas highly considering D&I and all graduates of QCHS. When I mentioned it to my adult children they were not surprised at the cancellation. They all indicated they believe D&I was never a focus for the district, it was only certain staff that were notable for supporting all students.

I would hope the board does not continue to find excuses for not providing education on D&I as well as a culture within the district that excepts everyone.
