Tinicum supervisors continue event venue zoning application

A zoning hearing about a proposed new events venue at 31 Creamery Road in Tinicum Township, which was originally convened on Aug. 13, has been continued to September 24 at 6:45 p.m. The announcement was made at the Aug. 18 public meeting of the board of supervisors, who had entertained preliminary discussion of the project at their June and July meetings.
 
The applicants are requesting relief from various sections of the township’s zoning ordinance, in order to establish a new venue for events, such as weddings. Officials and other residents have expressed concern about traffic and other potential impacts.
 
The hearing will be held remotely because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Interested parties can attend the meeting by emailing meberle@grimlaw.com with their name and address, prior to noon on the date of the hearing, to request a remote invitation, and to receive instructions for participation.
 
Also at the Aug. 18 meeting, supervisors approved the commencement of a two-week public comment period for the land preservation committee’s recommendation for township purchase of a conservation easement for the 20-acre Barnhurst property on Sanctuary Hill Lane in Upper Black Eddy.
 
The proposal calls for a township price of 24 per cent of the appraised value of the development rights, plus closing costs, and the balance paid through a donation by the landowner.
 
Before and after the Aug. 18 meeting, residents who have been frustrated by the now over 9-year closure of the Headquarters Road crossing over Tinicum Creek at Sheep Hole Road continued to express their deep dissatisfaction with the lack of progress toward restoration. They were particularly riled by an Aug. 13 published opinion piece by a former township official, sharply questioning county commissioners’ apparent participation in the matter, and the reply from the county commissioners’ chair.
 
Other residents have insisted the closed bridge could be rehabilitated, instead of replaced by a new structure as PennDOT has insisted, leading to a legal challenge by the preservationists that is awaiting action in federal court. The county has no jurisdiction in the matter.
