The Birches joins initiative promoting dementia awareness

For the past seven years, The Birches at Newtown has provided memory care services for older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
Many towns and cities have recognized the need for dementia awareness and the Dementia Friendly Newtown initiative was launched in 2019, which The Birches joined.
The group consists of residents, businesses, and other senior living communities trying to raise awareness about dementia, foster inclusiveness, and bring access to services that promote a better quality of life for those living with dementia, their caregivers and families.
“There’s a stigma associated with dementia, but with greater awareness, understanding and compassion, we can help lessen the fear so those living with the disease can have a better quality of life,” said Julianne Hart, marketing director of The Birches.
To raise awareness, Dementia Friendly Newtown provides two activities, rock decorating and walking, which anyone interested can participate in.

In October, The Birches’ residents, staff and their families will be decorating river rocks donated by All American Hospice.
Pick up a complimentary rock at The Birches, located at 70 Durham Road in Newtown, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individuals can keep it for their garden or return it to The Birches by Oct. 7. These rocks will be distributed along the route of the Dementia Friendly Newtown’s dementia awareness walk.
Dementia Friendly Newtown’s dementia awareness walk will take place on Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. in two locations — Friends Home and Pennswood Village.
If you are interested in registering for the event, contact Carole Williams by Oct. 7 at 267-291-3903 or
