The Art of the River Towns Artist of the Week: John Schmidtberger

Posted
This month we are featuring recipients of the Art of the River Towns Juried Show awards. Art of the River Towns, presented by River Towns Magazine, was held Oct. 1 to 4, at Prallsville Mills in Stockton, N.J.

First-prize winner John Schmidtberger is an artist, gallerist and cartoonist from Upper Black Eddy, working in the Bucks/Hunterdon area, as well as Maine.

“His paintings have been described as modern and poetic, with a strong sense of light, deliberate brushwork, and a vivid palette,” Schmidtberger says in his artist statement.

Schmidtberger grew up in Hackettstown, N.J., and attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire on a scholarship. At the University of Pennsylvania, he studied with Neil Welliver (1929-2005), Robert Engman (1927-2018) and Hitoshi Nakazato (1936-2010), earning an MFA in 1987.

In 1990, he co-founded Brushworks, Inc., one of the area’s first decorative painting companies. In 2011, he founded Schmidtberger Fine Art, a contemporary art gallery in Frenchtown, N.J.

“Schmidtberger is represented in important private collections such as Mitchell Zuckerman, former executive vice president at Sotheby’s, Richard Goode, renowned classical pianist, Kate White, author and editor-in-chief at Cosmopolitan and screenwriters Mark Rosenthal and William Tally,” he said in his artist statement.

Work by Schmidtberger and over 100 other local artists can be found and purchased on the Art of the River Towns Online Sales Gallery through Dec. 31. The online gallery features over 400 unique works by local artists. For information, visit Rivertownsmagazine.com.
