Susan Jo Gardos (nee Shill)

Posted

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Jo Gardos after a brief illness in Doylestown PA.

She was much loved by her sisters Nancy Shill of New Hope PA and Paula Nicolai of Lebanon NJ plus many nieces and nephews and dear friends. She was predeceased by Dr. Howard Bleich who passed away four months earlier. They were married for 37 years.

Born as Susan Jo Shill in Newark NJ to Belle Rich Shill and Dr Benjamin Shill, she lived in Cambridge MA and Newton MA where she was the head librarian at the Russian Research Center Library of Harvard for her entire career. She received her Bachelor’s Degree at Douglass College of Rutgers University and went on to study Russian history and language in Oxford University in England on a Fulbright Fellowship. From there she used her Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to obtain her Master’s Degree in library science at University of Wisconsin.

She was an accomplished scholar and pianist. Always caring about others, she helped Russian and Chinese immigrants learn English as a second language. She enjoyed history, traveling, the NY Times Crossword puzzles, scrabble, nature and beautiful skies.

The funeral service was at Menorah Chapels in Millburn NJ on January 19th and she was interred at Crest Lawn Cemetery in Atlanta Georgia beside her husband.

Much thanks and respect to Pine Run Lakeview who gave her loving care in her last months.
