Sunflower Art Project raises over $3,000 for Ukrainian refugee children; more aid needed

Posted

After learning about the growing number of Ukrainian refugee children who have arrived in their school district, several youth artists from Bucks County joined together to create one collaborative painting, “Sunflowers for Ukraine,” in an effort to help raise funds for the refugees.

Each student took turns painting a section of the sunflower art. Posters of their painting were created and sold, and the original painting was put on silent auction. The project has been a great lesson in giving back for the young artists, and it is also fun for them to think about all of the homes and businesses in their community that now have a poster of their artwork on display.

Their art project has helped to raise over $3,155 so far. The need to get more funds to the refugee children, however, is still there. If you have a child who has a Ukrainian student new to their class, a sunflower poster would be so nice to display in the classroom to show support.

For anyone who wishes to contribute to this cause, some posters are still left and available for purchase at Countryside Gallery, 2 S. State St. in historic Newtown. In alliance with the Newtown Rotary C.A.R.E.S. program, 100% of proceeds benefit the Ukrainian refugee students.

The Sunflowers for Ukraine artwork was painted by Amelia Binkley, Ava Barbrow, Jack Barbrow, Camryn Blauth, Connor Boucher, Brynn Casey, Erin Casey, Allison Cirillo, Victoria Cirillo, Taylor Dahms, Amanda Gardner, Addison Kohler, Olivia Kelly, Anthony Kelly, Hanna Lipski, Andrew Loudon, Tim Loudon, Abbie Lustig, Keiley Lyons, Darcy McCullough, Sophia McGee, William McNamara, Ava Peterson, Alivia Peterson, Violet Peterson, Grace Porter, Sarah Porter, Chris Riether, Camille Rizzo, Morgan Schimek, Gabi Smith, Reece Smith, Abby Steadman, Chase Steadman, Erin Stone, Ian Stone, Katie Sukunda, Charlotte Van Lieu, Ella Walsh, and Abby Walsh, with the guidance of local artist Bonnie Porter.

Countryside Gallery and Newtown Hardware House, both on State Street in Newtown, are also the drop off locations for anyone who wishes to donate $25 Walmart, Target, and Visa gift cards, which will be distributed to the Ukrainian families through the Newtown Rotary. Consider purchasing one of the remaining posters, or dropping off gift cards to help the Ukrainian students and their families.
