Students receive Jim Hamilton Shad Memorial Scholarships

Posted
For the 39th consecutive year, two outstanding local art students were each awarded a $10,000 scholarship to support to their respective college educations. The 2020 winners are Lambertville, N.J., resident Laura Adams and New Hope resident Morgan Grabarz.

Adams is a graduate of South Hunterdon Regional High School and will pursue a degree in fine arts at Tyler School of Arts, Philadelphia. Adams’ love of jewelry design encouraged her to start her own business, Stripes. She donates a portion of her jewelry sales to charities such as Ehlers-Danlos Society, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and Mental Health America.

Grabarz is a graduate of New Hope-Solebury High School and a junior at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City. She recently launched her own fashion line, MG Designs, which is available locally at Sojourner in Lambertville.

The Jim Hamilton Shad Memorial Scholarship is made possible through the generosity of many individuals, each of whom works to raise money for these annual scholarships. Artists donate original artworks, which are sold at auction each year. Patrons purchase the art and the proceeds all fund the scholarships.

Over the life of the scholarship, recipients have gone on to be self-supporting fine artists, have careers in music, theater arts and graphic design. Jim Hamilton, co-founder of the Shad Festival, was a resident of Lambertville for most of his life and was an active philanthropist and supporter of the arts.
