Stories from time in India theme of new book by Adrew Mills

Posted

Andrew Mills’ first book, “Home in India: A Pilgrimage with People and Poverty in South India” was published on May 15 by Resource Publications, an imprint of Wipf and Stock Publishers in Eugene, Ore.
The book is a memoir describing his work and the people he met in South India from 1956 to 1961.
The author and his young family arrived in South India nine years after India’s independence. His mission was development work among the poor in a village area under the Church of South India.
The memoir details the excitement of adjusting to a new culture, learning the South Indian language Tamil, and application of the author’s skills to help villagers, all Dalits, the outcastes of South Indian society. In the end, his devotion to his work with the villagers comes into a major conflict with his dedication to his family and his marriage.
Much of the memoir is devoted to telling the stories of the author’s friends and colleagues in India who inspired him. It turns out that they are the primary reason why he is truly at home in India, loves India and why he wrote the book.

Mills is retired and lives with his wife, Helen, in Lower Gwynedd. Together they have six children, 17 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He turned 90 in October, four months after he started writing the book.
At home in the United States, Mills has worked for several environmental engineering firms as a groundwater hydrologist from 1972 to 2011. From 2014 to 2019 he served as a part-time computer programmer.
Much of his spare time has been filled with activities aimed at lifting up vulnerable people and trying to prevent or stop violence and wars against all people.
The book is available at Amazon.com either as a paperback or a Kindle version or directly from the publisher. See andrewmillsbooks.com for more information.
