Statue of the Scourged Christ visits region

Posted

The pilgrim Statue of the Scourged Christ is currently visiting St. John Neumann Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, 10400 Roosevelt Blvd., Philadelphia.

The life-size statue, which is a “graphic representation of the suffering” of Jesus Christ, according to an announcement provided by the Rev. Harold McKale, chaplain of the St. John Neumann Center, has been typically available along the East Coast around Lent and sometimes Advent. It will go to Holy Savior in Norristown for Lent this year.

According to the announcement, the statue may be “unsettling” to some, but is a “fascinating and deeply moving work of art” to most viewers.

The visiting schedule at St. John Neumann Center is as follows: 9-11 a.m. Jan. 30 and 31, and Feb. 6, 7, 13 and 14; 10-11 a.m. Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 and 11; 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Feb. 5 and 12; 1-3 p.m. Jan. 29 and Feb. 1, 8 and 15; 6-7:30 p.m. Jan. 26 and February 2, 9 and 16.

Large groups are asked to call McKale in advance at 215-698-5664.
