Son says flood victim was “selfless”

Donald Bauer’s son, Darby Bauer, said his father helped his mother escape from their SUV when floodwaters closed in on the couple as the remains of Hurricane Ida swept through the region last week.
Donald Bauer, 65, did not survive the tragic event near Unami Creek in Milford Township.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Darby Bauer said, “Without his help, I don’t think she would have gotten out of the car. He was selfless down to his last act.”

The couple were returning to their Perkiomenville home from their daughter’s volleyball game at DeSales University when their vehicle stalled in the flooded roadway, Darby Bauer told the AP. It drifted into a house, said the son, who told the AP he was on the phone with his parents at the time.
When the vehicle’s rear window broke, Donald Bauer helped his wife, Katherine Bauer, 54, through the opening, according to AP reporting. She held onto a tree for about an hour before being rescued and taken to St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus in Quakertown, authorities said.
