Rumors of Village Fair return are true

Posted

Rumors about the return of the much-loved Village Fair, held in Doylestown from the 1960s to the 1990s, are no longer rumors.

Village Improvement Association (VIA) board member Carol Shugars, chair of the 2023 fair, has confirmed that the popular event will return. It will be held at Central Park in Doylestown Township from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 24.

Other nonprofit service organizations will join with the Village Improvement Association in partnership with Doylestown Township to sponsor the event. With a theme of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” the event will bring together local nonprofit organizations to raise funds for the members of the community who are in need of assistance with rising food, utility, and housing costs.

The VIA of Doylestown, now in its 128th year, has always looked for ways to improve the health and welfare of the community. That tradition continues this year as the VIA celebrates the Centennial of Doylestown Hospital, which the organization founded in 1923 and continues to govern today.

The afternoon will feature live entertainment, games, food trucks, and a variety of booths staffed by volunteers from the participating nonprofit organizations. Some of the organizations will have items for sale, while others will feature displays, activities and games to challenge and entertain visitors.

“We at the VIA are looking forward to the future in reinstating an event that many local residents fondly remember attending as children. Our hope is that a new generation can feel the joy and reward of giving back to our beloved community, while having fun in the process. All donations on the day of the event will go directly to those in need,” said Shugars.

She said the Village Fair was started in 1961 by the Junior Women’s Club of Doylestown, and it ran until 1992, when the organization disbanded. Initiated by Sally Steinbach, it was modeled after Abington Hospital’s June Fete. By the time the Village Fair ended, it had become a three-day event.

The event is rain or shine. Tickets are $5 per person, with children 6 and under admitted free. For information, and a listing of participating organizations, visit www.villagefaircentralbucks2023.com.
