Robots among us

Posted

I wonder how many diners in Bucks County are having their meals served to them by genuine robots?

The restaurant at the Wesley Enhanced Living, where I eat, has two bots. Each with little TV type heads, Robbie and Robin deliver your order tableside and your human server actually puts your plates on the table while the robot scoots away.

Unlike Rosie, the harried robot on the cartoon TV show the Jetsons, the Wesley bots travel along at a pace close to the senior citizens who dine there. They can be a bit impatient. If they encounter a road jam, they will spin around and find an open route.

Perhaps the most unexpected impact of having artificial intelligence that functions in this environment is how easily people have adapted to having them around. They fit right in.

One feature that is annoying is the music they play. It’s the same “Pachelbel’s Canon” piece over and over. A little musical variety, or none at all, would be nice.
