Robert W. (Bob) Doherty passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 4, 2022 at the age of 87. He was a resident of Solebury, Pa., for the past 61 years.
Born in Trenton, N.J., the son of the late William and Helen (Ferry) Doherty, Bob graduated from Hamilton High School West. At a young age he found his passion for music and became a well-known jazz musician, embarking on a professional career that spanned more than 40 years. He toured the US before settling down in Solebury with his family, and then played extensively throughout the NYC, Trenton and Philadelphia areas. He also played frequently at the acclaimed Deer Head Inn in Delaware Water Gap.
While serving in the Air National Guard, he developed a keen interest in ham radio and electronics. He was an active ham radio operator for over six decades, connecting with other enthusiasts from across the U.S. and all corners of the globe.
Bob loved to travel and cherished the opportunity to discover new places and cultures. He especially enjoyed taking his grandchildren on adventurous vacations and sailing trips in the Caribbean. His wide-ranging interests included astronomy and history, and he took pleasure in caring for wildlife in his garden. He always enjoyed meeting new friends and above all will be remembered for his generosity in helping others. He will be forever in our hearts and missed by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61 years, Claire I. Doherty, his son Robert Raymond Doherty, and his sister Helen Archer. Survivors include his son William (Bill) and his wife Brenda, four grandchildren Kevin, Collin, Laura, and Brian, and two great-grandsons Finnegan and Parker.
A private gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate his life. Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
