Preservation program among most successful in the United States

Posted

Solebury Township was an early leader in recognizing the importance of managing the growth of its community by preserving land and open space. Starting in 1996, Solebury voters overwhelmingly approved a bond issue to preserve land. They have approved bond issues three times since, authorizing as much as $56 million for the land preservation program.
Because of the commitment of residents, the Solebury Land Preservation Program is one of the most successful in the nation. In purely monetary terms, taxpayers have received a great return on their investment because fewer new homes have been built, resulting in less money being spent on such community services as police, roads and schools.
Beyond the dollar savings come the benefits of land preservation that are not as apparent:
- Solebury’s beautiful vistas and quiet streets attract many people to the township;

- The groundwater can be recharged by rainfall, helping to ensure that wells do not run dry;
- Farming has increased, helping to maintain Solebury’s rural character.
By reelecting Kevin Morrissey and electing Hanna Howe to the Board of Supervisors on Nov. 2, we will continue to have experienced leaders to guide us through the next chapter of preserving and protecting Solebury.
Dr. Jennifer Perez, North Point, Solebury Township
