Portion of Route 563 bears fallen World War II Marine’s name

Posted

A stretch along Route 563, from Route 313 to Old Bethlehem Road in Quakertown, is officially now known as “PFC John Rivers Way” in honor of a World War II veteran who sacrificed his life for his country.

On Saturday, Aug. 17, a sign was dedicated along Route 563 to Pfc. John Rivers, a machine gunner killed in action in 1942 at the Tenaru River, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. Rivers, a member of the Marine Corps, Second Battalion, First Marine Division, was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. He lived in and attended Quakertown High School before joining the Marines.

The ceremony was led by members of Quakertown’s John Rivers Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11322.
