Photographic mosaic “Float” opens at River House

Posted

A one-night exhibition at the River House at Odettes, 274 River Road, New Hope, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, will feature New York/Lambertville, N.J., photographer and artist Jeffrey Apoian’s cyanotype mosaic work titled “Float.”
Utilizing a photographic process from the early 1800s, Apoian has captured the “extraordinary imagery” of swimmers in the clear waters of the Mediterranean in Greece.
As a professional award-winning New York photographer, Apoian has worked with major magazines and agencies. His art, however, has focused on the unique use of old-world techniques and modern images.
Primarily exhibiting abroad, he is one of a select group of artists associated with the 25-year-old Hydra School Project in Hydra, Greece. This will be the first exhibition of Apoian’s cyanotypes in the U.S.

The cyanotype process marries a chemistry created by physicist in 1840 with a photographic image. The chemistry is coated on watercolor paper and the photographic negative placed on top of the treated papers. It is exposed to the sun revealing a cyano-blue printed image. Taking one image and creating 30 images from the one, creates a mosaic look that is completely new.
“I’ve been amazed by these images and the feeling they give the viewer. It is like one has joined that swimmer underwater and is there with them. Many of the pieces are large in scale and it is easy to get lost in the water with them. I am a swimmer and love this work,” said Carol Cruckshanks, director of New Hope Arts.
The New Hope Arts Council is a sponsor of the Artist Series along with River House. A portion of the proceeds are donated to New Hope Arts, a nonprofit regional art center. Attendees are able to get a reduced parking voucher by registering through an RSVP with River House at 215-682-2022.
