Philadelphia police to hold gun buyback event

Posted

The Philadelphia Police Department will hold a gun buyback event at Lincoln Financial Field from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, June 6. Everyone who turns in an unloaded firearm to a police officer onsite will receive a $100 gift card funded by the Eagles and the Center for Violence Prevention at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. No questions will be asked and no appointment is needed.

Individuals turning in their unloaded firearms at Lincoln Financial Field on Monday are advised to enter Lot K off Pattison Avenue. All firearms must be unloaded and safely stored in the trunk of each vehicle so they can be easily accessed by police officials managing the exchange. To protect the anonymity of participants, the event will be closed to media.

“Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens ages one to nineteen in the United States,” said Madeline Bell, president and chief executive officer of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). “We see violence through the eyes of the many children we care for, either as victims, or as schoolmates and neighbors of those directly impacted. Finding solutions to this public health crisis is an important part of our mission and this event is part of our multi-faceted approach to ensure the health and safety of all children.”

The Philadelphia Eagles and the City of Philadelphia also created EndPhillyGunViolence.com, a resource website designed to aggregate information and steer young people to proven and effective help.
