Perkasie lights its 115th holiday tree

Posted

Families, neighbors and four-legged friends gathered in Perkasie Saturday to kick off the holiday season with food, fire dance shows, antique tractor rides, photo ops, and America’s oldest tree-lighting ceremony.

Perkasie’s tree-lighting ceremony began in 1909 and is now in its 115th year. In 2015, Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick entered it into the Congressional Record, officially recognizing it as the oldest in the United States.

To embrace the season of giving, the tree-lighting ceremony includes a food drive to support local pantry Pennridge FISH.

This celebration was attended by several notable guests, including Mrs. Claus, Santa Claus, Buddy the Elf and the Mayor of Perkasie.

Santa selected one lucky child to assist in lighting the tree. The decorative fire truck he arrived in lit up the street as he handed out candy to the crowd.

Although it may have seemed like holiday magic, this event was made possible by the volunteers, and community sponsors.
