Pearl S. Buck Writing Center offers writing courses, short story discussions

Posted

Linda Wisniewski will again offer her popular monthly Zoom Memoirs Writing Classes, starting on the first Monday evenings of the month from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Feb. 6, and running through July 3.

She also will offer her six-month, in-person Memoirs Classes, which will meet in the Cultural Center on the third Wednesday afternoons of the month from 1 to 3 p.m. May 17 through Oct. 18. A $200 registration is required.

These classes will guide the student toward centering on one segment of their life and turning it into a compelling story, whether their goal is to share it with family and friends or to publish it for a wider audience. Each section includes time to practice writing that month’s lesson and to give participants gentle, constructive feedback.

Between class sessions, participants will also be able to discuss articles on memoir writing and share their writing with other students and the instructor.

Wisniewski writes about life and the connections we make by giving others time and space to be heard. She is a former feature writer and columnist for the Bucks County Herald and The Bucks County Women’s Journal. Her work has been published widely in literary magazines, newspapers, anthologies and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

She wrote a memoir, “Off Kilter,” published by Pearlsong Press and a novel, “Where the Stork Flies,” published by Sand Hill Review Press. Her website is lindawis.com.

There is a two-step $200 registration process for all PSB Writing Center zoom classes: Send Cindy Louden, chair of the Writing Center, your complete address and your home/cell phone number. This information will be forwarded to Nancy McElwee, who will call you and ask for your credit card information. If you have additional questions about any Writing Center offerings, contact Louden at clouden@pearlsbuck.org or 267-421-6203.

The Pearl Buck’s Short Story Discussions for 2023 will take place via Zoom from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month from March 14 until Oct. 10. Text used will be: Buck, Pearl S. “The Good Deed and Other Stories of Asia, Past and Present” (The John Day Company. 1969.)

Copies of the text are currently available online at Amazon.com, Abe Books.com, Thrift Books.com, Biblio.com, and Act 2 books.com. Most are in the $7 to $15 range.

Six to seven stories from the “Good Deed” text will be selected for discussion, and additionally, “India, India” from Buck’s collection “East & West.” Text information and a tentative calendar will be sent to participants. Dr. Carol Breslin, Gwynedd Mercy University professor emerita, leads the discussions for this complimentary presentation. To register, or for information, contact Cindy Louden, chair, Writing Center, at: cllouden@verizon.net or 267-421-6203.
